Keep Your Dog Safe: Choosing the Right Pool Safety Cover

For most households, dogs aren’t just pets… they’re family.  They share our enthusiasm and love to be by our sides.  We love that.  But, during the off-season, that energy can result in your dog running across the pool cover.  If that sounds like something of little concern, keep in mind that there are 10X the amount of swimming pool accidents with dogs, than there are with children, each year.

Luckily, due to the growth of households with pets (and especially dogs), there is an increasing awareness for how to better protect our pets in the off season. As you can see in the chart below, households that own a dog are a growing trend.

When Pool Covers Aren't Safe for Dogs

As pool covers get older, they start to fade in color and start holding water due to sagging.  At this stage, pool covers can become dangerous and unstable.  When that happens, dogs can fall through the pool cover and be trapped underneath.  Unfortunately, they will not be able to get back out.  It would be similar to being trapped under ice.

What is Needed to Make a Pool Cover Safe for Dogs?

Once your pool cover has gotten old and started breaking down… the only way to ensure safety is to replace the cover.  Patches are fine if you are only keeping leaves out of your pool.  But, if you have a dog living with you, we would not recommend that.  The only way to ensure safety is a new cover built with safety in mind from the beginning.

If you plan to replace your old cover, make sure your new pool cover has the following features:

Thicker Threads

Thicker threads on a pool cover, offer the following benefits:

  1. supports more weight
  2. more durable, so the pool cover lasts longer
  3. provides a shield when a dog’s nails scrape the cover

Strong Stitching offers the following benefits:

  1. reduces tearing that could result in a hole forming that could fail to hold a dog’s weight
  2. keeps edges safe from holes forming, that could cause a leg injury in a pet
  3. supports more weight from snowfall

Using high quality brass anchors helps pool covers to be safer by:

  1. Providing corrosion protection so that they do not rust out and weaken, causing a strap-fail
  2. Using high quality anchors that are made specifically for the load they are required to carry

Using Stainless Steel Springs with protective coverings makes your pool cover safer by:

  1. Increasing load capacity as a strong and durable metal
  2. Fighting against corrosion by the use of stainless steel plus a plastic coating, to reduce rusting

Three Dog safe pool covers

If you want to ensure that you are installing the safest pool cover for your pet, here are 3 pool covers specifically made to support the weight of the largest dogs.  They all have their own particular advantages.  We are here to help you decide which may be best for you!

If you’ve been trying to figure out how to keep your dog from walking on the pool cover… but haven’t had any luck.  Then, these covers are made knowing that your dog may walk on them and their weight can be supported!

The Standard Mesh is safe for all pets.  They allow water to drain through, so no water pools on top of the cover.  While it meets all of the safety specs, it does not have the same durability as the Advanced Mesh or the Solid Covers.  However, it offers an economical choice for keeping your pet safe!

The Advanced Mesh cover offers all of the benefits of the Standard Cover, while also offering extra thick fibers and stronger stitching.  Its the strongest pool cover that allows the benefit of water and melting snow to be able to drain off the cover.

Solid Covers are strong and durable.  They also completely block out sunlight too, which reduces algae blooms.  They keep the pool it’s cleanest, throughout the off-season.  However, they require a pump to keep water off the top of the cover, since they have no drainage.
